Description

Chilli Name : MUSHROOM RED
Chilli Species : Baccatum
Chilli Origin : South America
Chilli Heat : Medium

Mushroom Red is a traditional South American aji type chilli, named for its distinctive, mushroom-shaped pods. It’s part of the Capsicum baccatum family, known for its fruity flavour, thick flesh, and reliable productivity. This variety is popular across Latin America for drying, stuffing, or slicing fresh into sauces where its flavour truly shines.

Pods are round and slightly flattened, around 4–5 cm across, ripening from pale green to bright red. The flavour is sweet, slightly tangy, and aromatic, with medium heat in the 10,000–20,000 SHU range. When dried, the pods hold their shape beautifully, creating distinctive, disc-like flakes often used in regional South American cooking.

Plants are large and spreading (80–100 cm tall), producing heavy yields of hanging pods that mature through summer. The foliage carries the typical baccatum white-and-yellow flowers, and the plants perform exceptionally well in warm, bright conditions — in pots or open soil.

Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 100–110 days, rewarding growers with abundant crops.
