Clockwork Red is a modern superhot chilli, bred for its extreme heat and aggressive pod structure. As with many contemporary chinense crosses, its exact lineage isn’t always published, but it is known as a USA-developed strain in the growing world.
Pods are knotted and heavily wrinkled, often with short stinger tails, ripening from green to a deep red. Heat is superhot, in the same class as other 7 Pot and Reaper-type chillies, capable of pushing past the million SHU mark. Flavour is fruity, but the intensity of the burn usually takes centre stage.
Plants are medium to tall, typically 80–100 cm, with a strong upright habit and reliable pod set when grown in long hot conditions.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, often sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants need 100–120 days to reach maturity, performing best in greenhouses or polytunnels in cooler climates.
