Description
Chilli Name: MATA FRADE
Chilli Species: Chinense
Chilli Origin: Brazil
Chilli Heat: Medium
Mata Frade is a semi-wild Brazilian variety with a distinct, clean flavour and natural resilience that make it both easy to grow and rewarding to use. Compact and bushy, it adapts beautifully to pots, greenhouses, or balcony growing, thriving even where space is limited.
The small, rounded pods ripen from green to a glowing red-orange, creating a striking contrast against the dark foliage. Their thin walls allow for rapid drying while retaining strong flavour, making them excellent for use both fresh and dried.
Flavour is sharp and direct, without the tropical sweetness typical of other chinense types. The heat is moderate, providing warmth and clarity rather than intense burn. This makes Mata Frade ideal for everyday cooking where a clean, straightforward chilli flavour is desired.
When dried and ground, Mata Frade produces an aromatic powder that works well in spice rubs, seasoning mixes, and general culinary use. It adds depth and brightness to meat dishes, soups, and sauces without overpowering them.
Originating from Brazil, Mata Frade is appreciated both for its ornamental value and its dependable culinary performance. It’s a fine example of a naturally balanced, easy-growing chinense that offers both beauty and versatility.
Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
