Chilli Name: SANGRIA
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: Unknown
Chilli Heat: Mild
Sangria is a compact ornamental annuum variety that delivers an explosion of colour throughout the growing season. Known for its vibrant upright fruits and dense branching habit, this plant is a true showpiece that brightens any garden, patio, or windowsill. Despite its decorative appearance, the pods are fully edible and pleasantly mild in flavour.
The small conical fruits begin deep purple, then transition through orange to bright red as they ripen, creating a stunning multicoloured display that looks almost like a burst of fireworks. Each plant produces a dense canopy of colourful pods that continue to develop over many weeks, ensuring a long-lasting display of colour.
Flavour is light and fresh with a mild warmth, typically in the 1 000–5 000 SHU range. The chillies can be used in salads, as garnishes, or as decorative accents alongside cooked dishes. Though primarily ornamental, Sangria adds both visual appeal and gentle heat to the kitchen.
Plants are extremely compact and resilient, well suited to small pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil but tolerate drought and variable conditions well. Indoors, they provide a splash of colour year-round when placed in bright light.
Sangria is often chosen for its aesthetic value, but its versatility as a mild, edible chilli gives it dual purpose. A perfect choice for gardeners seeking something vibrant, easy, and rewarding.
