Pimenta Barra do Ribeiro is a traditional Brazilian chilli originating from the Barra do Ribeiro region in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. It’s a true local heirloom — grown for generations in home gardens and small farms — valued for its complex, fruity flavour and steady, hot burn.
Pods are medium-sized, lantern-shaped, and slightly wrinkled, 4–5 cm long, ripening from light green to bright red. The flavour is sweet, aromatic, and slightly floral, followed by a lingering hot heat in the 80,000–150,000 SHU range. It’s widely used in Brazilian sauces, marinades, and vinegars, where its flavour depth stands out against tropical fruits or grilled meats.
Plants are medium-tall and bushy (70–90 cm), producing heavy yields of pods through the warm months. Like many Bacatuum types, it thrives in humid, tropical conditions but adapts well to greenhouse growing in cooler climates.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in around 110 days and continue cropping well into late summer.
