Description
Chilli Name: JALAPEÑO TORMENTA
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: Mexico - Original Strain
Chilli Heat: Mild
Jalapeño Tormenta is a distinctive and productive jalapeño variety bred for flavour rather than heat. Despite its fiery name, this chilli is exceptionally mild — often almost completely non-pungent — making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy the rich jalapeño taste without the burn.
The plants are vigorous and prolific, producing large, smooth pods around 10 cm long and 4 cm wide. As they ripen, the fruit changes from deep green to vibrant red, often developing light corking on the surface. The thick-walled pods are meaty and juicy, perfect for stuffing, roasting, or using in classic jalapeño poppers.
Flavour is notably sweet and aromatic with only a trace of warmth. It captures the essence of a traditional jalapeño — fresh, green, and slightly tangy — but replaces the heat with a subtle natural sweetness. Its thick flesh caramelises beautifully when grilled or baked, enhancing its already rich flavour profile.
Jalapeño Tormenta is faster to mature than most jalapeño types and is known for its heavy yields throughout the growing season. The plants are sturdy and adaptable but can be a little challenging to overwinter successfully, making it best treated as an annual in cooler climates.
Created as a mild-tasting jalapeño hybrid, Tormenta offers the familiar look and texture of a jalapeño with a far gentler bite — a superb variety for flavour lovers, families, and anyone wanting the jalapeño experience without the heat.
Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
