Jalapeño Dieguito is an Italian-bred jalapeño variety created from a cross between the Farmers’ Market Jalapeño and the Cherry Bomb pepper. This hybrid brings the best of both parents — the classic jalapeño flavour and warmth combined with the sweetness and juiciness of a cherry-type pepper. The result is a unique, heart-shaped chilli with exceptional culinary versatility and visual charm.
Pods are large, rounded, and slightly heart-shaped with thick, juicy walls. As they ripen from green to red, they develop pronounced corking — the natural surface cracking prized by chilli enthusiasts for its rustic appearance and flavour depth. The texture is crisp and meaty, ideal for roasting, grilling, or stuffing.
Flavour is noticeably sweeter and juicier than a standard jalapeño, with faint hints of melon or watermelon when fully ripe. The heat is mild, comparable to traditional jalapeños (around 5 000 SHU), offering warmth without overpowering other ingredients.
Plants are vigorous, adaptable, and highly productive, performing equally well in garden beds or large containers. They reward growers with abundant fruit and rich colour transitions throughout the season. For the best flavour, allow pods to ripen fully to red before harvest.
Developed in Italy, Jalapeño Dieguito has quickly gained recognition among growers and chefs alike for its excellent balance of sweetness, texture, and gentle heat. It’s particularly well suited to stuffing, roasting, or slicing fresh into salsas.
