Hainan Yellow Lantern, known locally as 黄灯笼椒 (Huang Denglong Jiao), is a traditional Chinese chinense variety from Hainan Island, prized for its strong fruity flavour and vibrant colour. It’s the signature chilli used to make the island’s famous Hainan Yellow Lantern Chilli Sauce, a national delicacy with a bright, tangy aroma and deep heat.
Pods are lantern-shaped and thick-walled, ripening from light green to rich yellow-orange. Heat is very hot, typically 250,000–350,000 SHU, with a clean, fruity-citrus flavour that balances sweetness and spice beautifully.
Plants are medium-sized (70–90 cm), bushy and highly productive, thriving in warm, humid climates. They produce heavy crops of striking yellow pods throughout the growing season.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants reach maturity in about 100 days and crop heavily under long warm days.
