Devil’s Tongue Chocolate is a colour variation of the original Devil’s Tongue, a chilli first discovered in Pennsylvania, USA, during the 1990s. It belongs to the habanero/lantern-shaped chinense family, with the chocolate strain valued for its unusual pod colour.
Pods are elongated and pointed, resembling a tongue, ripening from green to a dark chocolate-brown. Heat is very hot, similar to habaneros, with fruity chinense flavour balanced by the earthy notes often found in darker-coloured chillies.
Plants grow 70–90 cm tall, bushy and productive, with good yields of uniform pods. They are well-suited to both pots and open ground in warm conditions.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants reach maturity in around 100–110 days, producing pods steadily through the season.
