Chinese Five Color is a traditional ornamental chilli from China, long grown for its dazzling display of colours as much as its use in the kitchen. The pods change colour in stages, moving through cream, purple, yellow, orange, and red, often with multiple colours on the same plant at once.
Heat is medium, making the pods usable in cooking as well as decorative. Flavour is crisp and slightly bitter when green, becoming fruitier as the pods ripen to full red.
Plants are compact and highly ornamental, usually 40–60 cm tall, with dense branching and abundant fruit sets. They are especially popular in pots or as garden borders thanks to their rainbow-like effect.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in around 90 days and are very reliable for both ornamental display and culinary use.
