The Burundi Pepper is a traditional annuum from East Africa, reflecting the long history of chillies in the region following their introduction from Portugal in the 16th century. Grown widely in Burundi, this variety has adapted to the local climate and is an important part of regional cooking.
Pods are slim and pointed, typically 5–7 cm long, ripening from green to red. Heat is in the hot range, strong and punchy, used fresh, dried, or ground into spice mixes.
Plants are hardy and productive, reaching 70–100 cm tall, and are well suited to hot climates with consistent yields.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in around 90–110 days from sowing and crop reliably in long warm seasons.
