Description
Chilli Name : BUENA MULATA
Chilli Species : Annuum
Chilli Origin : USA (William Woys Weaver, heirloom)
Chilli Heat : Medium
The Buena Mulata is a beautiful heirloom annuum from the USA, preserved and shared by food historian William Woys Weaver from his grandfather’s seed collection. This variety has been grown since at least the early 20th century and is valued for both its striking colour shifts and its reliable medium heat.
Pods are slender and tapered, around 15–20 cm long, ripening through a full spectrum of colours — starting as lavender-purple, then shifting through orange, brown, and finally deep red. Flavour is rich and slightly sweet with a balanced medium heat, making it versatile for fresh, dried, or cooked use.
Plants grow to around 60–90 cm tall, producing heavy yields across the season. The colour-changing pods and strong heritage connection make this variety especially prized by collectors and growers of traditional chillies.
Seeds germinate best at 25–28 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants take 80–100 days from sowing to maturity, cropping steadily throughout summer.
