Description
Chilli Name : BLACK N RED
Chilli Species : Chinense
Chilli Origin : Unknown (modern cross, USA)
Chilli Heat : Hot
The Black N Red is a modern superhot variety, most likely bred in the USA, combining the deep dark pod colouring of black strains with the searing heat of red superhots. While not as historically rooted as older landraces, it has become popular with collectors and growers seeking unusual colouring paired with extreme heat.
Pods are gnarled and heavily wrinkled, ripening from dark black-purple to a deep, blood-red finish. This dramatic colour change, alongside their aggressive shape, makes them visually striking. Flavour is fruity but often overpowered by the intensity of the heat, which falls firmly into the superhot category.
Plants are vigorous for a chinense, usually 90–120 cm tall, and capable of strong yields under long, hot growing conditions.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants require 100–120 days from sowing to harvest, with greenhouse or polytunnel growing recommended in cooler climates to achieve full maturity.
