Description

Chilli Name: THUNDER MOUNTAIN
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: China – Guizhou Province
Chilli Heat: Mild

Thunder Mountain, also known as the Thunder Mountain Longhorn, is a remarkable Chinese annuum variety famous for its exceptionally long, slender pods that can twist and curl into graceful spirals. Native to the Guizhou region, known locally as the “Thunder Mountains,” this chilli is as ornamental as it is practical, with excellent yield and distinctive appearance.

The pods can reach up to 30–35 cm in length, ripening from green to vibrant red. Their thin skin and flexible flesh often cause them to coil naturally as they grow, giving the plant a unique, sculptural look. Despite their dramatic size, the pods are pleasantly mild, making them ideal for everyday cooking.

Flavour is clean, sweet, and lightly peppery, delivering warmth without intensity — around 1 000–5 000 SHU, placing it in the Mild range. The thin walls make Thunder Mountain perfect for drying, and it is traditionally sun-dried or lightly smoked before being ground into a rich, mild chilli powder.

In the kitchen, it’s an exceptionally versatile variety. The pods can be used fresh in salads, stir-fries, and salsas, or stuffed and roasted whole. When dried, they develop a deeper aroma and subtle sweetness that complements Asian-style dishes and spice blends.

Plants are tall and vigorous, often requiring staking to support the long fruit. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil and perform reliably in both pots and open ground. With proper support and warmth, they produce a heavy crop of long, decorative pods throughout the season.

Originating from the mountainous regions of Guizhou in China, Thunder Mountain combines beauty, flavour, and reliability — a perfect choice for growers seeking a unique chilli that’s as impressive on the plant as it is in the kitchen.

Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
