Description
Chilli Name: THAI ORANGE
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: Thailand
Chilli Heat: Hot
Thai Orange is a traditional Thai chilli type known for its bright fruit colour and strong heat, commonly grown for both culinary and ornamental use. It represents a regional form of small-fruited Thai chillies selected for colour variation and productivity.
Pods are small, slender, and typically borne in upright clusters. They mature from green to a vivid orange, retaining their bright colour at full ripeness. The fruits have thin walls, making them suitable for both fresh use and drying.
Flavour is sharp and clean with a pronounced heat, typically in the 50,000–100,000 SHU range, placing it in the Hot category. It is widely used in Thai cooking, including curries, stir-fries, and sauces where both heat and colour are valued.
Plants are compact to medium-sized and highly productive, producing large numbers of upright fruits over a long growing season. They perform well in warm climates and are suitable for container growing as well as open-ground cultivation.
This type is part of the wider group of Thai chillies integral to Southeast Asian cuisine. Orange-fruiting selections are less common than red types but are valued for their visual appeal and equivalent culinary use.
Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
