Portokolova Fifronka (PI 370374) is a traditional Bulgarian heirloom chilli, known locally for its sweet aroma, gentle heat, and reliable productivity. The name “Portokolova” refers to its orange colouring (portokal meaning “orange” in Bulgarian), while Fifronka is a regional name for small, sweet-hot peppers often grown in home gardens and markets across the Balkans.
Pods are medium-sized, 8–10 cm long, conical and slightly curved, ripening from green to deep orange. The flavour is sweet, fruity, and lightly smoky, with mild–medium heat in the 3,000–8,000 SHU range — perfect for fresh use, salads, roasting, or pickling. The balance of sweetness and warmth makes it a household staple in traditional Bulgarian cuisine.
Plants are compact and prolific (50–70 cm tall), producing heavy yields of uniform pods throughout the summer. It performs well in both greenhouse and outdoor conditions, thriving in warm, sunny spots.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 90–100 days, producing abundantly through late summer.
