Description

Chilli Name : HANGIJAO 10
Chilli Species : Annuum
Chilli Origin : China (Guizhou Province)
Chilli Heat : Medium–Hot

Hangijao 10, also written Hang Jiao 10 (杭椒10号), is part of China’s famous “space chilli” breeding programme, where seeds were sent into orbit as part of the Chinese Space Breeding Project (航天育种) to encourage natural genetic variation. Upon their return to Earth, the best-performing plants were selectively bred, resulting in stronger growth, better yield, and enhanced resistance — traits that define the modern Hangjiao line.

This variety originates from Guizhou Province, one of China’s traditional chilli-growing heartlands, and is prized for its balance of heat, flavour, and productivity.

Pods are long, slender, and slightly twisted, measuring 10–15 cm in length. They ripen from glossy green to vivid red, developing a clean, sharp flavour with a lively bite. Heat is medium–hot, around 25,000–40,000 SHU, making it ideal for stir-fries, pickles, and fresh chilli sauces.

Plants are tall and upright (80–100 cm), highly productive, and well-suited to warm, humid climates. The Hangijao series is now widely cultivated across China and forms a cornerstone of regional cuisine.

Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 90–100 days and crop steadily through the summer months.
