Lingua di Fuoco — meaning “Tongue of Fire” in Italian — is a traditional Italian chilli known for its bold flavour, elegant pods, and dependable performance. It’s a variety cherished by growers across the Mediterranean for its strong heat, vibrant colour, and excellent drying quality, used in everything from pasta sauces to cured meats.
Pods are long and tapered, typically 10–12 cm in length, ripening from green to deep red. The flavour is bright, slightly smoky and full-bodied, carrying medium heat in the 20,000–40,000 SHU range — enough to bring warmth and depth without overwhelming delicate dishes. When dried, the pods keep their rich red hue and develop a warm, earthy sweetness, perfect for flakes or infused oils.
Plants are upright and productive (60–80 cm tall), producing steady crops of hanging pods throughout the season. They thrive in hot, sunny conditions and perform well in both open ground and containers.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in around 90–100 days, cropping consistently until late summer.
