Jalapeño NuMex Piñata is a colourful jalapeño hybrid developed by the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University (NMSU) — the same world-renowned breeding programme that gave us the Sandia and NuMex heritage lines. The Piñata is a showpiece jalapeño, bred to deliver the full jalapeño flavour with extra heat and vibrant multi-colour ripening.
Pods are thick-walled and smooth, maturing from green through yellow and orange to rich red — three harvestable stages, each with slightly different flavour. Heat is medium–hot, usually 8,000–12,000 SHU, with a bright, grassy start that deepens to sweet and smoky as the pods fully ripen. The combination of colour and taste makes it ideal for grilling, stuffing, and decorative salsas.
Plants are medium-tall (70–90 cm), strong and high-yielding, cropping heavily through warm months. The NuMex Piñata line was bred for consistent pod size, thick flesh, and reliable yields — traits that make it both a commercial and home-grow favourite.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 90–100 days, producing a continual flush of multi-coloured pods.
