The Death Spiral is a modern UK-bred superhot chilli, originally emerging from cross-breeding work within the chilli genetics community. Its name comes from the pod shape, which twists and contorts as it develops, giving a spiralling, gnarly look.
Pods are medium-sized, heavily wrinkled and bumpy, often with twisted points or tails. They ripen through shades of green, orange, and red, with some phenotypes holding a striking mottled look before fully ripening. Heat is superhot, in the same league as Carolina Reaper and 7 Pot strains, with a brutal, long-lasting burn.
Plants are medium to tall, 80–120 cm, with strong branching and heavy pod sets when grown in long, warm seasons.
Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, usually sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants need 110–120 days from sowing to maturity, performing best under protection in cooler climates.
