Tricolor is a stunning ornamental Capsicum annuum variety bred for its multicoloured foliage and vibrant pods, which transition through a striking range of shades as they ripen. Though often grown for its beauty, Tricolor is fully edible — combining moderate heat and clean flavour with remarkable visual appeal.
Pods are small and upright, around 2–3 cm long, ripening from cream or purple to orange and finally deep red. The flavour is light, crisp, and slightly sweet, with medium heat around 20,000–30,000 SHU — enough to bring a punch to dishes without overwhelming them. The colour shifts make it a favourite for both ornamental pots and edible borders.
Plants are compact and bushy (30–50 cm tall), with variegated foliage in shades of green, cream, and purple. The continuous ripening cycle means multiple colours are visible at once, creating a true “tricolour” display through summer and autumn.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 85–95 days, producing heavily under good sunlight.
