The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion is one of the most powerful chillies in the world, originating from the Moruga district of Trinidad and belonging to the Capsicum chinense species. It was first brought to global attention by the Chile Pepper Institute (CPI) in New Mexico, where it stunned testers by producing pods exceeding 2,000,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) — earning it a place in the superhot hall of fame.

The pods are heavily wrinkled, lobed, and often feature a sharp, scorpion-like tail. They ripen from green to a deep, vivid red and deliver a slow-building, devastating burn, preceded by a short burst of floral, fruity flavour typical of chinense chillies. Heat levels consistently range from 1.2 to 2 million SHU, making it one of the hottest naturally occurring chillies ever tested.

During early trials, the variety was referred to as the "Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend" — a term used by CPI to describe a genetically mixed population of Moruga-type plants. Over time, as seed lines stabilised, the variety became widely recognised under its now-standard name: Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. The “blend” designation is still used informally to reference those early mixed seed stocks or variations circulating among growers.

The plant is vigorous, productive, and thrives in hot climates with a long growing season. It is a popular choice for making extreme hot sauces, powders, and chilli extracts, and continues to be a favourite among growers seeking maximum heat.
