Serrano Tampiqueño is a true Mexican Serrano cultivar, named after the coastal city of Tampico in the state of Tamaulipas. It’s one of the standard commercial Serrano varieties grown across Mexico for both local and export markets — bred for uniform pods, excellent flavour, and reliable yields in varied climates.
Pods are slender and slightly curved, about 5–7 cm long, ripening from bright green to vivid red. The flavour is fresh, tangy, and slightly grassy, with a hot heat level of 10,000–25,000 SHU. It’s a classic chilli for salsas, guacamole, and traditional Mexican sauces, offering a bright, crisp bite without overpowering heat.
Plants are strong, upright, and highly productive (70–100 cm tall), producing clusters of pods continuously through the season. Serrano Tampiqueño is known for its resistance to disease and adaptability across Mexico’s central and northern growing regions. It’s a dependable, field-tested variety often used as a benchmark for Serrano quality.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in about 85–95 days, with steady production through summer and early autumn.
