Hangijao 7, also called Space Pepper 7 (杭椒7号), is one of the most successful cultivars to emerge from China’s Space Breeding Programme (航天育种). Developed through exposure to cosmic radiation and microgravity, it was selectively bred in Zhejiang Province for improved yield, uniformity, and flavour. The result is one of China’s most popular chillies for both commercial and home growing.
Pods are long and elegant, 12–16 cm in length, slightly curved with smooth glossy skin. They ripen from mid-green to deep red, developing a balanced medium–hot heat (25,000–40,000 SHU) and a bright, vegetal flavour with subtle sweetness. This makes Hangijao 7 ideal for stir-fried dishes, soups, and fresh market use where colour and flavour both matter.
Plants are upright and sturdy (80–100 cm), producing heavy yields over a long growing season. Its space-bred lineage gives it outstanding resistance to disease and humidity, making it a reliable performer across multiple climates.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting in 10–21 days. Plants mature in roughly 90–100 days, rewarding growers with consistent harvests and excellent shelf life.
