Hangijao 6, also known as Space Pepper 6 (杭椒6号), is another result of China’s Space Breeding Programme (航天育种), where chilli seeds were sent into orbit to promote natural genetic variation. Bred from the early Hangjiao types, this line was developed in Zhejiang Province for improved flavour stability and uniform pod production.
It’s a popular market and household variety throughout eastern China, appreciated for its moderate heat and crisp, green-chilli taste when harvested early. Hangijao 6 is commonly used fresh in stir-fries, noodle dishes, and lightly pickled condiments, bringing a lively heat that doesn’t overpower.
Pods are long, slim, and slightly curved, reaching 12–16 cm. They ripen from mid-green to bright red, maintaining a firm texture and glossy surface. Heat is medium, typically 20,000–30,000 SHU, with a clean, bright flavour.
Plants are upright and productive (70–90 cm), yielding dense clusters of pods over a long season. The space-bred genetics give Hangijao 6 exceptional disease resistance and adaptability to humid growing conditions.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in roughly 90–100 days, producing steady crops even under fluctuating temperatures.
