Description
Chilli Name : CHILE DE ONZA
Chilli Species : Annuum
Chilli Origin : Italy
Chilli Heat : Mild to Medium
Chile de Onza is a traditional Mexican chilli with a name that translates as “Ounce Chilli.” It is a heritage variety valued regionally for its contribution to sauces and rustic dishes. Though not as internationally known as Ancho or Pasilla, it holds cultural importance in Mexican cooking, where local chillies are often prized for flavour and tradition rather than sheer heat.
Pods are small to medium in size, typically elongated and slightly curved, ripening from green to deep red. Heat is mild to medium, and the flavour is earthy with a subtle fruitiness, making it useful both fresh and dried.
Plants are vigorous and upright, typically 70–90 cm tall, cropping steadily through the season.
Seeds germinate best at 26–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants usually reach harvest in 90–100 days, producing well into late summer.
