Description
Chilli Name : BLACK PEARL
Chilli Species : Annuum
Chilli Origin : USA (ornamental programme, USDA)
Chilli Heat : Medium
The Black Pearl is an ornamental annuum developed in the USA by the USDA breeding programme. It is one of the best-known black-leaved chilli plants, bred for its dramatic appearance but also carrying edible pods with a lively medium heat. Its combination of dark foliage, round pearl-like pods, and compact growth has won it recognition as a garden variety as well as a culinary curiosity.
Pods are small and round, around 1–2 cm across, ripening from glossy black to bright red. The heat is sharp and medium-level, with a fresh chilli bite. While primarily grown for looks, the pods are perfectly edible and can be used in cooking or pickling.
Plants are very compact, usually 30–50 cm tall, with dense branching, jet-black foliage, and clusters of pearl-like pods. Their striking colour contrast makes them a favourite ornamental chilli worldwide.
Seeds germinate best at 25–28 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants reach maturity in 80–100 days and are suitable for pots, beds, or decorative planting as well as kitchen use.
