Description

Chilli Name: TA SHI TZU CHIAO (CHAOTIAN PEPPER)
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: China
Chilli Heat: Hot

The Ta Shi Tzu Chiao is a transliteration variant associated with the well-documented Chinese “Chaotian” or “Heaven-Facing” chilli. The name refers to the distinctive upright growth habit of the pods, a defining trait of this traditional Chinese variety widely used in regional cuisines.

Pods are small, slender, and typically 2–4 cm in length, growing upright from the plant. They mature from green to bright red and have thin walls, making them ideal for drying. Their upward orientation is a key identifying feature among Chinese chilli types.

Flavour is sharp and direct, with a clean, pungent heat. Heat levels are commonly reported in the 30,000–50,000 SHU range, placing it firmly in the Hot category. These chillies are widely used dried in stir-fries, oils, and Sichuan-style dishes.

Plants are compact to medium in size and highly productive, often carrying numerous upright pods simultaneously. They perform well in warm growing conditions and are suited to both container and open-ground cultivation.

This chilli is deeply rooted in Chinese culinary tradition, particularly in Sichuan and Hunan cuisines. It is commonly referred to as “Chao Tian Jiao” (朝天椒), meaning “facing the sky pepper,” reflecting its unique growth habit and long-standing agricultural use.

Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
