Description

Chilli Name : NARANGA (PI 446900)
Chilli Species : Baccatum
Chilli Origin : South America
Chilli Heat : Medium

Naranga (PI 446900) is a rare chilli variety from the USDA seed collection, believed to originate from South America — possibly Brazil or neighbouring regions. Its name, Naranga, means orange in several local dialects, referring to its vivid pod colour when ripe. It’s a variety admired by collectors and breeders for its compact growth, ornamental beauty, and bold flavour.

Pods are small and rounded, around 2–3 cm across, ripening from light green to bright orange. The flavour is sweet, slightly fruity, and aromatic, with medium–hot heat that sits around 20,000–40,000 SHU — lively but not overwhelming. The thick flesh and zesty flavour make it perfect for fresh salsas, pickles, and sauces where colour and aroma stand out.

Plants are compact and bushy (40–60 cm tall), heavily loaded with upright pods that mature in clusters — often displaying multiple colours at once. It’s a favourite among ornamental growers and flavour chasers alike.

Seeds germinate best at 28–30 °C, sprouting within 10–21 days. Plants mature in roughly 90–100 days and crop steadily through late summer.
