Quick Buyers Guide to Chilli Plants

Seed Germination

To successfully germinate chilli seeds, it’s highly recommended to invest in a heated propagator. Chilli plants originate from warmer climates, and seeds need consistent warmth and moisture to sprout.

A heated propagator ensures this consistency, improving success rates and speeding up germination. Avoid old methods like wet paper towels or airing cupboards—they’re unreliable.

Time of Year to Start Growing

  • The earlier you start, the better your harvest.
  • Winter: Use a growing light to take full advantage of available time.
  • Late February Onwards: Natural sunlight will usually suffice.
  • In both cases, warmth remains essential. A heated propagator helps until outdoor temperatures stabilise.

Choosing the Right Chilli Plants

For beginners, start with lower-heat varieties that are easier to grow:

  • Aji, Cayenne, or Jalapeño are ideal options.
  • If growing indoors or on a windowsill, choose these varieties as they adapt well to indoor climates.
  • Starter Tip: Once seeds sprout, move plants to a starter pot with fresh peat compost or coir compost depending on what is available. Water and feed as needed.

See our guides on Soil, Water, and Feed.

Pot Sizes

Chilli plants thrive in 5–10 litre pots:

Limited Time? Keep plants in smaller pots to manage their growth.
More Time and Space? Use larger pots for bigger, more productive plants.

Finally: Keep it Simple

Chilli plants are resilient—they’ve evolved for millions of years. They need:

  • A little water and feed
  • Lots of sun
  • Fresh air
  • The more you meddle, the more they suffer. Let nature do the work!
