Chilli Seed Germination
So, you’ve decided on which chilli to grow, now its time to sort out what to germinate the chilli seeds in
Using a Propagator
For the best results, it’s highly recommended to use a thermostat-controlled heated propagator. This setup ensures consistent warmth and high humidity, which are essential for fast and successful germination.
- Keep your propagator humid by including wet or damp items inside.
- Ideally the temperature around the seeds will be 29-30c
- The lower the heat the longer it will take and lower success rate
- Use an electronic thermometer, preferably one with a min/max range, to monitor and maintain the ideal conditions.
Consistency is the key, the more stable during the day and night the climate around the seed is, the better the germination will be
Alternative Methods
If you don’t have access to a propagator, here’s a basic alternative:
- Place your seeds in a small pot of soil
- Cover the pot tightly with cling film to retain warmth and moisture.
- Leave it in a warm place. Not on top of the radiator, the closer to 29-30c the better, 40c and hotter will cook the seeds, 10c or lower will do nothing for the seeds
While this method is less scientific and will result in slower germination rates, it can still produce results. Just be patient!
Rockwool Cubes vs. Jiffy Plugs and Soil
Personally, I prefer using Rockwool cubes or Jiffy Coir Plugs for germination. They allow me to control and add nutrients as needed.
That said standard soil - fresh compost are perfectly fine options—it’s all about personal preference. Choose what works best for you!
Germination Timeframes
Once your setup is complete, leave your seeds to germinate. This process can take anywhere from 5 days to 21 days, depending on the type of chilli seeds you’re growing.
Superhots will take longer than cayenne types, wilds are slow and unpredictable
Domesticated Seeds:These include varieties like Jalapeños that have been cultivated and adapted over many generations. They tend to germinate quickly and easily.
Wild Seeds: Wild chilli seeds can take significantly longer to germinate. Be patient—your effort will be rewarded!
