Chilli Name: TLACOLOLERO
Chilli Species: Annuum
Chilli Origin: Mexico
Chilli Heat: Mild
The Tlacololero is a traditional Mexican chilli variety originating from the Guerrero region, particularly associated with the Sierra Madre del Sur. It is a regional landrace adapted to local growing conditions and valued for its use in drying and sauces.
Pods are long, slender, and distinctly twisted or curled, often reaching 15–25 cm in length. They ripen from green to red and have thin walls, making them particularly suitable for drying. The characteristic curved shape is a defining feature of this variety.
Flavour is mild to moderately pungent with a rich, slightly earthy profile. Heat levels are typically in the 1,000–3,000 SHU range, placing it in the Mild category. It is commonly dried and used in traditional Mexican sauces and regional dishes.
Plants are vigorous and productive, adapted to warm, dry environments. They produce a good yield of long pods over the growing season and perform well in full sun with well-drained soil.
This variety is part of traditional Mexican agriculture and is closely linked to the “Tlacolol” farming system of Guerrero. It represents a locally adapted landrace rather than a modern commercial cultivar.
Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
