The cultivar was developed by Dr Roy Harper in 1956 by crossing breeding a Numex No.9 type with a Californian Anaheim-type.. 'Sandia' produced 5-7 inch long, medium wide green pods with medium thick walls which are much hotter than Numex 6-4 (1,500-2,000 SHU) but not as hot as Barker. Very popular with home gardeners.
