Description

Chilli Name: BGH 460
Chilli Species: Praetermissum
Chilli Origin: Brazil
Chilli Heat: Unknown

BGH 460 is a wild chilli from the Capsicum praetermissum species, collected in Brazil as part of the BGH (Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças) collection — Brazil’s national vegetable gene bank. This accession is one of several wild praetermissum types preserved for their genetic diversity, adaptability, and ornamental beauty.

Like others in its species, BGH 460 grows into a dense, shrubby plant with a natural tendency to perennial growth in frost-free conditions. The foliage is often dark green with purplish hues, and the flowers are small, elegant, and marked with distinctive purple colouring on the petals — a hallmark of C. praetermissum.

The pods are tiny, upright, and spherical, ripening from green through dark purple tones to a final deep red. Though just the size of a pea, these chillies are fiery, typically ranging between 30,000–60,000 SHU, with a sharp, fruity burn. Their small size and bold appearance make them especially prized for ornamental gardens, though they are also edible and useful in sauces or infusions where heat is desired without overwhelming volume.

BGH 460 is best suited to growers interested in preserving chilli biodiversity, experimenting with breeding projects, or cultivating chillies with wild resilience and beauty. It’s a gem from Brazil’s native Capsicum gene pool — hardy, fiery, and full of character.
