PI 639655 (GRIF 9268) Chilli — A Rare Wild Capsicum eximium from the Bolivian Andes

PI 639655, also known as GRIF 9268, is a wild chilli accession from Bolivia, classified as Capsicum eximium and held in both the USDA Plant Introduction (PI) and GRIF (Genetic Resources Information Facility) collections. This variety belongs to one of the most ancient and genetically distinct chilli species, native to the high-altitude regions of the Andes, where it thrives in cool, rugged, and often nutrient-poor environments.

The plant is a small, shrubby perennial, typically displaying narrow green foliage, purple-tinged stems, and the characteristic purple flowers with pale centres seen in all C. eximium types. The pods are tiny, upright, and rounded to oval, ripening from green to a vivid red. While extremely small, the chillies deliver a potent 30,000–60,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) and feature a wild, sharp burn with occasional fruity undertones.

PI 639655 / GRIF 9268 is primarily valued for its cold tolerance, pest resistance, and rugged adaptability, making it a prime candidate for genetic research and breeding programmes focused on stress resilience. It’s also highly sought after by collectors interested in preserving wild Capsicum diversity.

In short, PI 639655 is a bold and resilient chilli from the heart of Bolivia’s highlands — offering fire, toughness, and a direct link to the wild origins of the chilli pepper family.
