PI 439430 Chilli — A Wild Capsicum eximium from the Bolivian Highlands

PI 439430 is a wild chilli accession collected in Bolivia and classified as Capsicum eximium, one of the earliest-diverging and most distinctive species in the Capsicum genus. Preserved in the USDA Plant Introduction (PI) system, this accession reflects the genetic richness of the Andean highlands, where chillies grow in rugged, high-altitude environments.

The plant forms a compact, shrubby perennial, adapted to cooler temperatures, rocky soils, and low fertility — all common to its native habitat. Like others in its species, it features purple-streaked stems, narrow green leaves, and beautiful purple flowers with pale centres. The pods are tiny, upright, and teardrop-shaped, ripening from green to bright red.

Don’t let the size fool you — these little pods often deliver a fiery burn, typically around 30,000–60,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The flavour is sharp, wild, and sometimes lightly fruity, but the real value of this accession lies in its resilience and genetic uniqueness.

PI 439430 is prized for use in breeding programmes, especially for traits like cold tolerance, pest resistance, and compact growth. It’s also an excellent choice for collectors exploring wild Capsicum biodiversity.

In short, PI 439430 is a tough, fiery, and beautiful wild chilli — a perfect representative of Bolivia’s rich natural chilli heritage.
