Description

Chilli Name: TEXAS BIRD PEPPER
Chilli Species: Annuum (var. glabriusculum)
Chilli Origin: USA (Texas)
Chilli Heat: Very Hot

The Texas Bird Pepper is a wild chilli type native to Texas and the southern United States, closely related to the Tepin/Chiltepin group. It is part of Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum and is considered one of the original wild forms of cultivated chillies, historically spread by birds.

Pods are very small, round to slightly oval, typically less than 1 cm in diameter. They are borne upright on the plant and ripen from green to bright red. The thin-walled fruits are often harvested and dried or used fresh in traditional preparations.

Flavour is bright and sharp with an intense, fast-acting heat. Heat levels are commonly in the 50,000–100,000 SHU range, placing it in the Very Hot category. The heat is immediate but tends to dissipate more quickly than many larger-fruited chillies.

Plants are vigorous and can grow into large, bushy forms under suitable conditions. They are well adapted to hot, dry environments and can be perennial in frost-free climates. Germination can be variable, reflecting their wild nature.

This variety represents a regional form of wild bird pepper found in Texas, closely linked to indigenous and traditional use. It remains an important part of local chilli heritage and is often foraged rather than formally cultivated.

Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
Chilli Seeds Qty is 5 per pack unless stated.
