Description
Chilli Name: CAPSICUM SCHOTTIANUM
Chilli Species: Schottianum
Chilli Origin: Brazil
Chilli Heat: Medium
Capsicum schottianum is an extremely rare wild chilli species, native to the Atlantic forests of Brazil. It belongs to a small, isolated group of Capsicum types that have adapted to humid, shaded environments—quite different from the hot, open conditions favoured by most cultivated chillies.
The plants are low-growing and delicate, with soft green foliage and small white flowers. The fruits are tiny, usually less than a centimetre long, ripening to a glossy orange red. Their flavour is intensely sharp with a fast burst of heat, more typical of wild chillies than domesticated types.
As a wild species, Capsicum schottianum is valued more for conservation and breeding than culinary use. It’s slow to germinate and thrives in filtered light with consistent warmth and humidity. For collectors and enthusiasts, it offers a rare glimpse into the hidden corners of the chilli family tree.
