Description

Chilli Name: CAP 1487
Chilli Species: Praetermissum
Chilli Origin: Brazil
Chilli Heat: Very Hot

CAP 1487 is a captivating and lesser-known wild chilli from the Capsicum praetermissum species, collected in Paraná, Brazil. This variety forms part of the Chilean and Brazilian accessions preserved in seed banks, including the Centre for Genetic Resources (CGN) and the Chile Pepper Institute’s CAPS collection — with the "CAP" prefix denoting its curated status in chilli preservation.

This chilli exhibits the classic hallmarks of C. praetermissum: small, upright pods, typically round to oval-shaped, which ripen from green to rich red or deep burgundy. Despite their size, the pods deliver a notable heat — generally in the range of 30,000–60,000 SHU — and are bursting with sharp, fruity flavour.

The plant itself is particularly striking, with a compact, shrubby structure, purple-tinged stems, and ornate purple flowers adorned with pale throats — a botanical trait that helps distinguish praetermissum from other wild species. It’s a naturally perennial grower, tolerant of cooler temperatures compared to many tropical species, and highly valued for its genetic resilience and ornamental appeal.

CAP 1487 is a superb choice for growers interested in biodiversity, seed-saving, or chilli breeding. Though not widely used in cooking due to its tiny pod size, it more than earns its place in the garden with its beauty, heat, and wild charm. A living piece of South American chilli heritage.
