Yellow Bird Chilli — A Bright, Fruity Chilli with Caribbean Roots
Yellow Bird is a striking yellow chilli believed to originate from the Caribbean, likely within the Capsicum chinense family. Though its exact origins are not formally documented in gene banks, it appears to be a modern cultivar or regional selection, developed for its fruity flavour, vibrant colour, and moderate to high heat.
The pods are small, slender, and pointed, often resembling a tapered teardrop or miniature rocket — hence the “bird” in the name. They ripen from green to a rich sunny yellow, and deliver a sharp, citrusy burn that usually falls in the 50,000–100,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) range. The flavour is clean and fruity, with tropical notes typical of chinense chillies — making it excellent for hot sauces, pickling, and salsas.
The plant is compact and highly productive, suited for both garden beds and pots. It thrives in warm conditions and is especially attractive to growers looking for colour, manageable heat, and bold flavour in one plant.
Yellow Bird is not a wild species or heirloom landrace, but it is prized by sauce makers and hobby growers for its flavour-forward heat and eye-catching colour — a small chilli that delivers big character in every bite.
