Chilli Plants and Insects
The age-old battle between insects and growers is less about eradication and more about balance. Creating an ecosystem that supports natural pest control can make a huge difference. For example, companion planting involves growing certain plants alongside your chillies to repel unwanted insects. If you’re facing a specific pest problem, research the insect and explore natural repellents.
Insects in Greenhouses, Polytunnels, and Hydroponic Rooms
Greenhouses, polytunnels, and hydroponic setups often act like flashy beacons for insects—you’ll always get visitors. Here are some examples from my own growing experiences:
-
Butterflies:
Butterflies might look beautiful, but their caterpillars are voracious eaters. One morning, you could find half your plant devoured!
Example: A stunning Red Admiral butterfly was found inside. It was safely escorted back to freedom. -
Flying Insects:
On hot days, opening doors for ventilation can invite unexpected guests.
Example: A wasp was discovered on a Galapagoense plant. Unfortunately, it had hovered too close to the grow lights, burning one of its wings. Despite the injury, it was gently taken outside, though it couldn’t fly.
Key Tips for Managing Insects
- Encourage Natural Balance: Support beneficial insects like ladybirds and bees, which help manage pests.
- Inspect Regularly: Check your plants often to spot early signs of insect activity.
- Ventilation Considerations: While airflow is essential, use insect mesh to keep out unwanted visitors.
- Handle With Care: Whenever possible, relocate insects instead of killing them, unless they pose a significant threat, like mites.
