Ants, Greenflies, and Chilli Plants
The more you learn about nature, the more there is to admire—even pests have fascinating evolutionary histories! However, ants and greenflies can wreak havoc on your chilli plants if left unchecked. Understanding their behaviours and natural solutions is key to managing these pests effectively.
How Ants and Greenflies Work Together
Ants are industrious creatures that can turn your chilli plants into "farms" for their own benefit:
- Greenfly Larvae: Ants harvest greenfly larvae as a food source for their own young.
- Hatching on Plants: Ants transport greenfly eggs to your plants, where the larvae hatch and feed on the leaves.
- A Growing Colony: Once mature, greenflies mate, producing more larvae for the ants to harvest, creating a cycle of infestation.
Signs of infestation include crinkling leaves, which may also be mistaken for sun or wind damage.
Managing Infestations
-
Inspect for Ants:
Look for ants and trace their paths to understand where they are travelling from and to. -
Quarantine Infected Plants:
Separate affected plants to prevent the spread of greenflies and ants. -
Combat Greenflies:
-
Introduce ladybirds, which are natural predators of greenflies.
-
Ladybirds are discussed further in our Ladybirds Section.
-
-
Discourage Ants:
-
Chilli Powder: Sprinkle chilli powder around the plants. Ants dislike the strong scent and will avoid the area.
-
Nematodes: Use nematodes (microscopic worms) to naturally drive ants away. Safe for pets and children, nematodes are a chemical-free solution applied directly to the soil.
-
A Natural Solution
By discouraging ants, you allow natural predators like ladybirds to thrive and control the greenfly population. This approach harnesses nature’s balance to protect your chilli plants without harmful chemicals.
